For once I'm talking fashion - what's on my wishlist
Because it’s fall and I’m excited to wear clothes again
I am by no means a fashion authority or someone who even particularly enjoys shopping for clothes, but when I get on the hunt for something, I will search to the end of the earth internet to find the exact thing that I’m looking for, and these are some of the fashion pieces that I’ve had my eye on lately.
You know those nights when you can’t sleep and decide to do some mindless browsing online at stores you wouldn’t normally shop because you finally have the time to explore options outside of your favorite 3 stores? That’s how I came across the gorgeous trench coat from Sezane, which is a brand that I love to see on other people but no matter how many times I try on their clothes, I never seem to feel comfortable or look like myself in them.
What caught my eye about this one is the black and green colorways, which are a refreshing departure from the usual beige (which is another color I never seem to feel comfortable in), and the slightly oversized fit looks so cool and effortless. I love the Mac silhouette, which does not have the traditional large lapel, and the buttons go down in a straight single row instead of a double-breasted. I find that both of these details lead to that more casual and effortless look that is much more aligned with my style. I also love the lining inside which adds some interest to the whole look.
However, I’m not really in the position to be spending $350 on an impulse purchase at the moment so until I find a store where I can try it on in person, I’ve been looking for some other alternatives that I can also try on and compare.
I sent out an SOS on Instagram for any similar silhouettes in black or green and got some promising responses. Not all of them are a strict mac silhouette but are similar shapes that caught my eye anyway:
& Others Stories Patch Pocket Cotton Coat ($259)- This is a slightly heavier coat than a mac coat, but I adore the deep muted gray-green color, and it might not be traditional but it feels very much like my style and comes in at a more comfortable $260 price point for my budget.
COS Voluminous Swing Trench Coat ($290) - Cos is one of those brands that can be hit or miss for me but when it hits, it HITS. I love their interesting yet minimal silhouettes and this coat hits both marks, and it’s black. I’m a little hesitant about the swing silhouette but willing to find it in person and give a shot. This is a wool blend coat so it seems like it could take me a little bit further into fall than a traditional trench, which I like.
Everlane has a more simple Mac coat silhouette ($178) for someone who’s looking for something more classic and fitted. I like the slightly more oversized look and something a little longer but this one is also at a <$200 price point and comes in a black and green as well.
In case you are looking for a classic beige color in a more affordable option, I did also find a few more versions that seemed promising:
Banana Republic Bonded Mac Coat ($350 but 40% off right now) - this only comes in one color, a light beige, but is about as classic a silhouette as you can get, plus it still has the belt to cinch in the waist.
& Other Stories Collared Car Coat ($259) - The car coat comes in a slightly shorter above the knee length and doesn’t have any water repellent qualities, but I adore the brown color of this, even if I know that brown isn’t the best color for me - but it could be for you!
Mango Cotton Trench Coat with Shirt Collar ($159) - I like the slouchy silhouette of this with the stand collar and belt detail, and this also comes at a pretty decent price point for an all cotton composition.
Other things in my recent browsing that have caught my eye:
Uniqlo is still one of my go to spots for basics and I have the red version of the polo cardigan from last year that ended up being such a versatile and comfortable sweater. Wear it fully buttoned and tucked in for work, and undo a few buttons at the top and bottom with some jeans or leather pants for a night out. This year, I’m looking to pick up the black one as well because I felt like I was really missing it last year.
Madewell Curvy 90s Straight Jeans and Curvy Perfect Vintage Wide Leg Jeans
I’ve been getting by with about 7 pairs of jeans - which is really just the right number for me to feel like I have options without getting overwhelmed, but some of them are starting to get really old and worn, like in a not cute vintage way, and some of them don’t make me feel as confident as I’d like so I’m looking to rotate out 1 or 2 pairs and bring in a mini refresh. Due to my natural body shape as well as some assets gained through years of workouts, I have a much smaller waist than butt/hip/thigh so a curvy fit, and specifically the curvy line from Madewell tends to fit me best in a way that doesn’t require additional alterations, which I usually do with other jeans.
I love the look of the slightly more relaxed straight jeans and I’ve really been craving some wide leg jeans so these may be my jean updates of the year. In the curvy line, I tend to size down one size to my true waist since my true waist size will actually fit my hips and butt in the curvy line. I actually just purchased a pair from Poshmark, which I find to be a great source for looking for Madewell jeans.
Onto some shoes, I’ve realized that I’m missing some transition shoes that aren’t sandals are my trusty Docs that I wear nonstop all winter. I have my Aldo chunky sole loafers but after wearing them heavily over the past couple of years they’re starting to look a little worse for wear, and I’m deciding whether to replace them with another loafer or something else. If I were to buy another pair of loafers, this pair from Vagabond seems slightly more rugged than my pair from Aldo, and they are made out of leather as well.
Madewell Beverley Mary Jane Flat
These have been living rent free in my head. They’re a little edgier and more substantial than a traditional mary jane flat, and I regret not biting the bullet before this gorgeous chocolate raisin color sold out, but I’m also closely eyeing the red for a little hint of a statement shoe. They’re 25% off right now which makes this even more tempting.
Every time fall comes around I go on the hunt for a good ankle boot. I’m mostly satisfied with the Vagabond boots I bought last year (which are currently also 25% off!), but I really love the deep brown color and slightly lifted heel of this one. I’m mostly likely fine with just the black boots I already have since I wear so much black anyway but I’m still keeping these in the back of my mind.
What’s on your wishlist these days? What items are you hunting for, and please tell me I’m not the only one who gets hyperfixations on specific things!!
Omg the brown other stories trench is divine 😍
I spent like 3 years hyperfixated on finding the perfect black slightly cropped jacket 😂. After sooo much Pinterest curating, I finally found mine this year at Me + Em, paying more than I ever have for a piece like that. But I do think when I’ve wanted something practical for multiple seasons it’s the right time to splurge, especially if I know it’s not a brand with many sales. For winter coats, though it’s almost a physical impossibility for me to not wait until Black Friday or end of season sales.
